Emory University is seeking a highly organized, computer literate individual to serve as the Managing Editor for the American Journal of Transplantation
Published on 03/10/10The American Journal of Transplantation is the number one ranked journal in the field of organ transplantation, a dynamic, scientifically driven medical subspecialty. It is the official journal of the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and is published monthly by Wiley-Blackwell. The Scientific Editorial Office will move to Emory University beginning in July of 2010 creating the opportunity for this position.
The Journal receives approximately 1800 manuscript submissions annually and has a submission to decision turnaround of 21 days, considerably faster than most refereed scientific journals. The Managing Editor is critical to the success and efficiency of the Journal. The Managing Editor reports directly to the Editor-in-Chief (EIC), serves as the liaison between the EIC and the Editorial Board, the publisher, and authors, and serves as the logistical coordinator for the peer review process.
The position requires excellent computer and organization skills, an ability to work effectively adhering to strict deadlines and journal rules, and an ability to communicate in a courteous and effective manner, verbally and electronically, with a broad range of international academic contacts. The position requires an individual with independent problem solving skills, an ability to proof highly technical scientific manuscripts with regard to format and form, and an ability to write summary literature and communications from the editorial office to editors, reviewers, authors, and officers of the parent societies.
The successful applicant will be hired as a full time employee of Emory University as an Associate Director, Publications, within the Department of Surgery. As such, the successful applicant will be entitled to the salary, retirement and health care benefits commensurate with this full time University position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor's degree is required, but a master’s degree in communications, public health, or a related area is preferred. Five years experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience in scientific communications is preferred. This is an Exempt position. Employees in this position are paid a salary on a monthly basis and are not eligible to receive overtime pay.
